Primeval (2007 - ??) is a British television series from ITV.

The first season of Primeval lasted for six episodes.

Overview

The premise of the series is that temporal anomalies are allowing creatures from the Earth's prehistoric past to reach the present. A group of scientists gather to investigate, and fall under the jurisdiction of the government, which is trying to keep the anomalies a secret.

There are three female characters in the main cast:

  • Claudia Brown (Lucy Brown), a junior Home Office (government) employee
  • Abby Maitland (Hannah Spearritt), a young zookeeper and reptile specialist

and

  • Helen Cutter (Juliet Aubrey), a paleontologist who disappeared eight years before the present time frame of the series

The stories focuses much more on the male characters, however, and the female characters rarely interact with each other. Nick Cutter's search for his wife is central to the plot, whereas Claudia Brown and Abby Maitland are more peripheral, being (respectively) usually overruled by her male hierarchical superiors and paired up with a young male geek who has an unrequited crush on her.

The series has also drawn criticisms for its homogeneously White casting, and comparisons with Doctor Who, which some see Primeval as attempting to rival (both shows feature time travel as part of their premises).
