The City, Not Long After is a novel by Pat Murphy, based on her experiences at the Exploratorium and in San Francisco. The novel takes place in a near-future post-apocalyptic San Francisco. The city is more or less an artists' colony, inhabited by all kinds of artists living anarchically in the remains of our civilization.
Not all of the post-apocalyptic world is as easy-going or artsy as San Francisco; the novel focuses on a war mounted by Sacramento to take over San Francisco's resources and bring the city more into line with hierarchical expectations. The artists, of course, resent this attack, and plan to foil it ... in their own inimitable style.
