The Old English Baron: A Gothic Story is a 1777 gothic novel by Clara Reeve. It was first published, anonymously, in 1777 as "The Champion of Virtue", and then republished in 1778.
The first gothic novel written by a woman is Clara Reeve's 1777 The Champion of Virtue (later renamed The Old English Baron: A Gothic Story). Reeve intended her text to correct the supposed faults of Walpole's Otranto, and it is notable in that it contains the first use of the haunted chamber motif.[1]
