Our language is formed by the place we were born: the names for the hills, the rivers, the trees. Our writing is about our history; the etymology of place and personal names. Words are like glaciers—most of the meaning is hidden, but with great mass. Growing up speaking Creole, Yorkshire, a Down East dialect—it changes what we write.
