Discrimination is the act of distinguishing between [things, people, categories, etc.].
In order to achieve and sustain the oppression of a class of people, it is necessary to distinguish between members of that class and members of other classes. This division of people into classes is a necessary prelude to hierarchisation.
Such divisions include gender, race, spoken language, sexual orientation, etc.
Institutionalized discrimination perpetuates the hierarchy of the oppressors and the oppressed on a large scale.
