Patriarchy was originally a term referring to a family structure, or a society based on such family structures, in which the father holds the social and political power.

More broadly, patriarchy can be used to refer to a collection of social institutions which enforce male supremacy and male power over women. This sex-class hierarchy requires the gendering of society.
