Women in prison has long been a staple in the sexploitation genre, permitting both explorations of lesbian sexuality, SM, and even heterosexuality (also often SM-oriented). Particularly popular in films, it's also showed up in literature.
SFnal works that use women in prison tropes, are actually full-on "women in prison" works, or actually depict women in prison (without necessarily relating to the women-in-prison genre) include:
- "In Arcadia Ego" (episode of "Millennium")
- Affinity by Sarah Waters
- "Locked Up and Tied Down" (episode of Xena: Warrior Princess)
- "Big Sister 2000" (on Girls from Another World, 1993 set of mid-lenth films)
