Television
- A medium for transmitting images (and sounds) at a distance.
- Short for "television set", a device for viewing television transmission.
- The messages transmitted via the medium.
Common abbreviations: TV, telly.
The word comes from the French, télévision, which itself combines two word roots: the Greek "tele", meaning far or at a distance, and the Latin "vision".
The technology for television once belonged to the realm of science fiction, and the principle of seeing things at a distance existed within fantasy long before that, and still does, when the means of achieving this end are magical instead of technological.
