Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), landmark novel by Mary Shelley, and arguably the first work of science fiction (as opposed to fantasy).

"Frankenstein was the creator, not the monster. It's a common misconception, held by all truly stupid people." Kryten, in the Red Dwarf episode "Quarantine".

The book has been adapted countless times, and Frankenstein's monster, as depicted in the movies (especially by Boris Karloff), is a pop culture icon, more renowned than its true creator, Mary Shelley.
