- The brothers have a lead on the Colt, which they have learned is in the hands of the demon Crowley (played by Mark Sheppard, of Firefly / Serenity, the X-Files episode "Fire", Doctor Who, Charmed, Battlestar Galactica, etc.). It starts out with Crowley making a deal with a banker, Mr. Pendleton, whose bank has failed (arguably, Bank of America?); the banker thought it would be a young attractive girl; Crowley (played by Mark Sheppard) tells him, "Your choice. You can cling to six decades of deep-seated homophobia, or give it up and get a complete bailout for your bank's ridiculous incompetence." Behind the scene Castiel is watching.
- Jo helps the guys break into Crowley's house, where he hands them the Colt, and gives them a lead to the Devil in Missouri. Crowley wants to help, he says, because Lucifer has even more disregard for demons than he does for humans.
- Castiel and Ellen have a drink under-the-table match. Dean comes onto Jo who turns him down in favor of self-respect. Bobby takes a group photo.
- The group shows up in a town and Castiel sees (white, male) Reapers everywhere: They only gather together at times of Great Catastrophe, he says, forebodingly. Castiel is trapped by Lucifer in a ring of holy fire. Lucifer tries to tempt him, of course. Lucifer's human vessel (Nick) is having some trouble.
- Demon Meg shows up, with invisible hellhounds; Jo saves Dean but is savaged by a hellhound herself. While they were making plans, Jo says you've got to be realistic; I can't make it out alive, but we can build a trap for the hellhounds and I can give you a shot at the Devil. Her mom protests; Jo says, "Mom, this might literally be your last chance to treat me like an adult. You might want to take it." Dean and Jo share a kiss fraught with longing. Ellen says, somebody's gotta let 'em in, and stays with her daughter. The only two semi-regular and heroic female characters die.
- Sam & Dean make their way to the townspeople. Sam confronts Lucifer, while Dean shoots him in the head with the Colt. Lucifer is down for a few but then rises. "Don't feel too bad, Sam. There's only five things in all of creation that that gun can't kill, and I just happen to be one of them." Lucifer knocks Dean out and taunts Sam with some "embrace the dark side" talk, and gives more of the father/son/brother pop-psychology. He then completes the ritual to raise one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Death (the mass murder of a whole town full of people) .
- Castiel & Meg have a chat, and then he uses her to get out of the ring of fire, and to come to Sam & Dean.
- Bobby, Sam, Dean, Castiel look at the photo of Ellen & Jo, and toss it into the fire, while the radio reports on a series of catastrophes in Missouri.
