Alanna and her twin bother Thom don't want the lives their father has picked for them. He wishes to send Alanna to the City of the Gods to learn to be a lady and Thom to the capital to train as a Knight. However Alanna wants to be a Knight and Thom a mage. So the twins switch places. It is forbidden for girls to train to be knights so Alanna must hide her sex for 8 long year while she trains, first as a page and them as a squire.
