Frontier fiction is fiction set on a "frontier"; space or territory unexplored by the narrator.

Common themes relating to frontier fiction include:

  • nature versus humanity
  • struggle for survival
  • us versus them: the frontier explorers or colonizers versus the native inhabitants; sometimes, the frontier explorers versus the folks back home
  • unregulation; lawlessness; lack of deep social structures
