Game studies is the field of study that uses social science, science, and humanities/critical perspectives to analyze games, gameplay, and human gaming. A significant component is video game studies, but studies of games and gaming beyond computer / video games is also included.

"Game studies" is distinct from "game theory", which is an approach to modeling behavior in social settings. The game theory approach, often used in economics, can be used in game studies or any other social studies field, but it is not related to game studies.
