List of significant Xena characters

This is a list of significant characters on Xena: Warrior Princess. Characters may be significant because of their roles in Xena's or Gabrielle's life, or because they recur in the show.

Gender issues

Xena: Warrior Princess is particularly notable for including numerous female characters of all sorts: villains, teachers, mentors, friends. In particular, the show very often passed the Bechdel test in having many female-centered episodes and in its general story arcs, which were about the characters of Xena, Gabrielle, and their relationship generally.

It wasn't quite consistent however.

• The short-term one-episode or very minor recurring villains were largely male, both in the named characters and in the extras. To some extent this may have been a nod to historical verisimilitude, although the Xenaverse creators regularly flouted historical accuracy.
• Sexual and romantic relationships: These were largely heterosexual. There were some female same-sex relationships, and that they were represented at all was beyond most comparable TV shows before or since. However, the representations were relatively rare and typically subtextual -- see for example, Xena and Gabrielle; Xena and various other women; Athena and her apparent lover; Minya and her fellow "thespian". Male-male same-sex relationships were somewhat sparser and even more ambiguous, although occasionally a male character was clearly coded as gay (e.g., Joxer's brother).
