About the IWOCSF

Mae Carol Jemison, M.D. (born 17 October 1956) is an American physician and a former NASA astronaut. She became the first Black woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992.

The fictional character of Uhura on Star Trek was an inspiration for her career as an astronaut.

Jemison herself made an appearance in an episode of ST:TNG, at the request of the episode's director and series star, LeVar Burton.
