Story within a story

A story within a story (to call it by simple terms) is a narrative device that allows for multiple levels of storytelling.

There are several variants of this. Flashbacks, etc.

Sometimes the stories are told by the characters, sometimes they part of the narration, sometimes they are interwoven throughout the main plot, etc.

Literary and cinematic devices used to tell stories within stories may vary due to the possibilities of each medium. Visual editing of moving pictures, the use of black and white cinematography, etc. may work in film, but not on the page, just as a written narrative alluding to past (or future) events may not work on the screen.
