Straight is a term that describes the opposite of something non-mainstream. Formerly, it was used solely as a term of approbation, indicating directness and moral fortitude: the straight and narrow; straight-forward; straight-up.

In the mid-late 20th century it was appropriated by various counterculture and marginalized groups to describe mainstream society. For example, "straight" can be used to refer to people who are inexperienced with or opposed to the use of drugs; people who are not queer; etc. It can be juxtaposed with twisted, bent, queer, etc. "Straight" can be applied to any meaning, suggesting undiluted and pure, or unnuanced and unsophisticated.
