The daughter of Alanna of Trebond Alianne or Aly as she is called, is captured by pirates and taken to the Copper Isles where she is sold as a slave. With the help of a God she quickly arranges special status for herself. She must work to help free the dark skinned Raka for the light skinned invaders who rule the Copper Isles.

Aly is one of Tamora Pierce's less popular main characters though there are people who like her. Many people feel she overcome the challenges given to her far to easily. Also her plot line is rather racist - why must the god send a white girl to make everything ok?
