Slavery is a social-economic system under which people deprive certain persons — known as slaves — of personal freedom and compel them to perform labour or services.

The term also refers to the status or condition of slaves, whom their oppressors consider property.

Types of slavery

Slavery is most commonly thought of as "chattel slavery": state recognition and enforcement of a position of absolute property over the slaves.

Indentured servitude is a form of slavery, limited by time and possibly other conditions.

"Wage slavery" is a term which refers to the condition of workers under capitalism. The use of the term "slavery" is intentional to reflect the loss of freedom caused by economic necessity. However, its use has never been widely adopted outside anarchist, Marxist, and some radical labor circles, and has been subject to criticism for minimizing the conditions and distinctions of chattel slavery.
