The Phantom Menace

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999), written & directed by George Lucas, is the first prequel to the original Star Wars trilogy.

"The Phantom Menace" inspired a huge resurgence in fandom.

It also received significant criticisms, both on artistic merits (writing, especially dialog, and acting) and for alien characters which resembled racist stereotypes. Among the latter, Jar Jar Binks is the best known example. Jar Jar's physiognomy suggested to many people the racist stereotypes of African Americans embodied in blackface and caricatures. Most particularly, his broken English seemed to have a quasi-Jamaican sound that, in combination with his physical appearance, suggested his creators drew on racist stereotypes in creating him; and at the least, were insensitive to the obvious racist resonance of the character.
